CODING ODYSSEY

/****
*Hello, World!
****/
A short message on why you should learn coding!(Note: this is not an infomercial from Ron Popeil)

Have you ever wanted to convert your ideas into lines of codes in a game coding experience? Create games and mini applications through manipulation of variables, flags and operands. By the end of the day you can say more than just “Hello, World!”

Side effects may include: creativity, logical-thinking skill, enhanced problem-solving ability, increased analytic skill, googly eyes and lots of fun. Coding is for everyone. There is no need to consult your doctor before learning. (Caveat: googly eyes not guaranteed)

Introduction to Information Technology (Module 1)

You will learn the basics of programming using Scratch, a graphical programming environment developed by MIT. In this module, you will focus on programming fundamentals, including how to accept user input, how to work with variables, and implementation of decision and control. Scratch provides a fun and easy-to-use graphical environment letting you quickly test out programming ideas and create basic games and animations.

As your ability progresses, you will be introduces to robotics programming through the Lego Mindstorms environment. You will create simple robots and program them for tasks (e.g., a robotic vehicle that avoids objects).

You can also select, as an optional component, programming in Minecraft.

Text-based Coding (Module 2)

In this module you are introduced to text-based coding, the fundamental manner in which computer and software programmers develop applications for everything from smartphone apps and web development to embedded software running behind the scenes in modern electronics. The specific programming environment will be Processing, a language developed to quickly create graphical objects from code.

You will start by drawing simple shapes and then implement the techniques you have learned in Module 1: user input, variables, decisions and control, and adding loops (the manner in which a program will loop through a set of instructions until a specific event occurs).

You will then group this knowledge together to make a simple game and, as an optional or group component, a more advanced coding project.
